Hotel Finds: Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel on the grounds of Machu Picchu and, consequently, provides access to the ancient site that no other property can even approach. To watch a sunset light up the skies behind Hyuna Picchu, after the busloads of tourists have left for the day, is something sublime. And observing the night skies as the architects of Machu Picchu saw them is a once in a lifetime experience.

Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel on the grounds of Machu Picchu, blends into the wooded surroundings.

Views from the rooms of Sanctuary Lodge are extraordinarily tranquil at the end of each day.

The Lodge, which is managed by the Orient Express, is upscale and impeccably maintained. The main restaurant and bar provide gourmet dining and are exclusively for guests, providing another level of privacy during the day when Machu Picchu is filled with visitors. Rooms are nicely appointed and include top-quality amenities.

Permanent residents at Sanctuary Lodge

The Sanctuary Lodge is relatively small, with two suites and 29 rooms. So, it’s best to book several months ahead, since availability is limited. And be prepared to pay premium rates. Just like the altitude, prices at the Sanctuary Lodge might leave you breathless. The daily rate does include all meals and, after all, how can you put a price on a New Natural Wonder?

Av. Imperio de los Incas, Aguas Calientes

This extraordinary hotel comes with an equally impressive itinerary of guest activities that are included with the price of the room: birdwatching excursions, visits to the on-site tea and coffee plantation, orchid tours, and sunset nature walks -- the large property boasts over 370 varieties of orchids and 18 species of hummingbirds. Best of all, you’ll feel as if you’re in your own cloud city, but conveniently, Aguas Calientes is only a five-minute walk away.

The Inkaterra is located on a stunning property that includes a tea and coffee plantation.

Inkaterra  guests can take advantage of numerous daily activities on site, including dining at the highly-rated restaurant.

Rooms have interesting architectural details, with cathedral ceilings and exposed beams. The restaurant is outstanding, serving traditional Peruvian fare. Machu Picchu can be reached easily by bus from Aguas Calientes.

Av. Hermanos Ayar Mz. 1 L-3, Aguas Calientes

The Sumaq Hotel is located just outside Aguas Calientes, at the base of  Machu Picchu.

Cooking courses in traditional Peruvian cuisine are available at the Sumaq.

Sumaq means beautiful in Quechua and the hotel more than lives up to its name. Situated on the road leading up to Machu Picchu, the property has magnificent views. The rooms are large and spacious; some have fireplaces. The restaurant is particularly notable, and cooking classes can be arranged. Rates are on the high end, but both breakfast and lunch are included in the price.

Palacio 136, Plazoleta Nazarenas, Cusco

Hotel Monasterio features centuries old antiques and architecture as well as dramatic views of Cusco.

The Hotel Monasterio restaurant looks out on rose gardens and terraced courtyard.

The chapel, part of the original monastery, dating back to 1592, has been painstakingly restored. The Cusqueño art is considered a national historic treasure.

The ONLY hotel in the world that offers an in-room oxygen enrichment service is the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco -- a point worth noting, since Cusco sits at 11,200 (occasionally dizzying) feet above sea level. But even more noteworthy is the exquisitely restored building itself. Once a monastery, the property is a nationally restored monument, complete with the original chapel, gold altar, and Cusqueño art.

Rooms are comfortable, with every modern convenience. The restaurant and bar serve food and beverages that are as elegant as the surroundings. Hotel Monasterio prides itself on service, and attention to detail is apparent the moment you step onto the premises. This property, like the Sanctuary Lodge, is managed by the Orient Express.
